Whenever you’re feeling down in the dumps about your country’s uncertain future at home and abroad there’s always the Navy SEALs to brighten your day. This weekend they went all Barbary Coast on the Somali pirates holding an American hostage. Significant? More like significantly awesome. If like me you wondered how hard it is to shoot three pirates in the head from 100 feet away, Slate has the answer here.
Some reports say this is a victory for Obama’s credibility on national security. Probably not since the pirates aren’t shanghaiing our citizens and/or prowling our coasts like the dastardly British in 1812, but it can’t hurt. I’d say it’s more of a victory for stop-the-depredation-of-our-vessels-or-the-SEALs-will-put-a-bullet-between-your-eyes. If Obama really were serious he’d tell Congress to issue a few Letters of Marque and Reprisal. Ron Paul would get on board.
I’m sorry to be so giddy about this, but it combines five of my loves: minor international conflagrations, pirates, defunct nautical terminology, Special Forces, and America. Man I miss home. I leave you with this (explicit).
