Monday Movie Still: Aguirre

Filed under: Uncategorized — David Schaengold @ 7:24 am

A not-particularly-famous moment from a famous film:

What struck me about this particular image was how characteristically Herzogian it is, both because of its peculiar Herzogian loneliness and its Herzogian interest in the otherness of animals. The horse has just been kicked off the raft, so to speak, and is now standing in the Amazonian rainforest, unsure of what to do, perhaps, or perhaps just unaware of the strangeness of its predicament. The raft will float on and abandon the horse, but those responsible for its fate are for a moment as disarmed by the image as we are.
