The Mormons

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michael E. van Landingham @ 10:41 am

I recently finished watching the 2007 PBS documentary on the Mormons and their church after I discovered that Frontline posts all of its content on-line. Two things surprised me. The first thing was minor— they didn’t mention Mormons are teetotalers who also abstain from caffeine. The second was pretty huge. While I’ve known Mormons had been the subject of mob violence and persecution before they moved to Utah, I never knew about the Mountain Meadows massacre, a Mormon-organized mass conspiracy to murder a party of settlers crossing the Utah territory in 1857. I’d suggest everyone watch it, especially those who don’t know much about the Latter Day Saints. It is a well done, thought-provoking piece.

  1. Read Under the Banner of Heaven for a really fascinating, frightening look at the LDS church and Utah (Deseret) which focuses mostly on the Fundamentalist sects. Fascinating. I will definitely check out the Frontline also.
