Megan McArdle highlights a cringe-inducing story in the New York Times about the murdered abortion protester:
I don’t think it helps the pro-choice side when a New York Times reporter writes an article on the fellow who was shot the other day and does everything but headline it “He was asking for it!” By the end, I was half expecting a quote to the effect that he liked to wear short skirts and bum cigarettes off of married men in bars.
Political martyrs should not always be made into saints. Sympathy for Pouillon’s position and anger over his death does not require a defense of his graphic style of protest. The same is true from the other side, and it’s shameful that the Times’s distaste for his views and tactics led them to explain his death away.
